A Translation of Senses

In Wednesday Weaving, we glimpsed the many-armed mind at work—thought reaching through color, gesture, and sound. If Complexity Part 3 gave us the theory of multimodality, this is its practice: a return to the studio where senses collaborate and thinking becomes visible.

Creativity often begins not with an idea, but with a vibration.
The artist listens inwardly for a texture or pulse that asks to take form. Every art practice, no matter how solitary, is a conversation among the senses. Kandinsky called this the “inner sound” of color (hello synesthesia!). Lygia Clark described her sculptures as “propositions” that the viewer completes through touch. John Cage spoke of “hearing silence,” teaching that perception itself is composition.

To work multimodally is to tune into that dialogue, to let one mode speak and another respond. The page listens to the sound; the hand translates the sound into movement; the eyes interpret the movement as meaning. This is the cognitive jazz ensemble that Complexity Part 3 mapped so clearly—the mind improvising across its many channels.

Take a moment before you begin. Notice what sense calls you first today.

Try This: Translating the Senses

You will need: a sheet of paper, a drawing tool (pen, pencil, charcoal, marker), and one sensory prompt of your choice.

Step 1 – Listen or Look Closely
Choose your sensory source.
If it’s a sound, listen for its rhythm, tone, and weight.

Do not describe; attend.

Step 2 – Translate, Don’t Depict
Begin to draw—not the object or sound itself, but its energy.

Is the image heavy or light? Shift scale accordingly.

You are composing with correspondences:

Now, describe your drawing aloud in five words or a short sentence.
If you began with sound, move to sight.
If you began with touch, move to language.
Ask: What did this translation reveal? What changed when the mode changed?

Step 4 – Layer Meaning
Add one more mode. If you started visually, overlay a few words or sounds; if you began with writing, sketch loosely over your text. Each mode becomes a lens that refracts the others. The artwork is not the final image; it is the network of correspondences you’ve built.

Step 5 – Reflect
Take a photograph of your work or sit with it quietly.
In a notebook, write three brief reflections:

1. What sense led you most strongly?

2. What did the translation teach you about your perception?

3. If you continued, which mode would you invite next?

Every act of artmaking is a kind of translation.
A sound becomes a shape, a color becomes a feeling, a gesture becomes a thought. The senses conspire in secret, each whispering its own version of the same truth. To work creatively is to listen for these crossings and to let them meet on the page, in the voice, in the movement of the hand.

In Complexity Part 3 and Friday Flourish: Synesthetic Studio, we explored how thought itself is multimodal: a choreography of perception where cognition moves between image, rhythm, and touch. Indian art, with its rhythmic forms and luminous symbolism, offers a vision of thought made visible. The gods of Hindu tradition, with their many arms and attributes, are not curiosities of faith. They are profound metaphors for distributed perception and simultaneous knowing. Each arm, each gesture, and each object held in the palm represents a mode of awareness at work.

In the bronze figures of southern India, the body of the deity is a map of cognition.

Shiva Nataraja, the cosmic dancer, performs within a ring of fire.
One hand beats the drum of creation, another carries the flame of dissolution.
One hand offers protection, another points toward the lifted foot: the promise of liberation. Movement, time, rhythm, and grace merge into one image of perpetual becoming. Every gesture signifies a principle of existence.

Vishnu, preserver of order, embodies the calm intelligence of equilibrium.
His four hands hold the conch (the sound of creation and breath), the discus (mind and discernment), the mace (strength), and the lotus (liberation). Each object, a sensory metaphor: the sound that starts the world, the light that guides thought, the weight that steadies purpose, and the unfolding of spirit.

Saraswati, goddess of knowledge, holds a veena (a South Indian lute-type instrument used in Carnatic classical music) across her lap, a manuscript, and a rosary. Here, learning is portrayed not as accumulation but as music, repetition, and reverence. Sound, text, and ritual combine to express the harmony of intellect and intuition.

Lakshmi mirrors this balance in the realm of prosperity and virtue.
Her four arms symbolize the four aims of life: ethical duty, prosperity, pleasure, and spiritual release. She is the embodiment of integration, reminding us that a whole life draws meaning from multiple sources held in balance.

Then comes Durga, fierce and radiant, riding a lion into the storm of Mahishasura. Her many hands each grasp a weapon bestowed by the gods. Her purpose is unity in action, strength distributed through coordination. Durga’s form reminds us that multiplicity can be disciplined and deliberate, that many energies can serve one aim.

Kali, the dark mother, extends this idea into transformation.
Her weapons and severed head are not spectacles of violence but symbols of cutting through illusion. She represents the truth that destruction is part of learning, that to know deeply we must also unmake our ignorance.

Finally, the Vishvarūpa, Krishna’s universal form in the Bhagavad Gita, expands this vision to infinity. Countless arms, countless faces, all beings and elements gathered into one cosmic body. Every motion, every sound, every form participates in a grand simultaneity. The divine mind is multimodal: each part acting in concert, every gesture contributing to the symphony and harmony of existence.

When seen through this lens, Indian iconography becomes a kind of cognitive map:
The drum of Shiva resonates with rhythm and time.
The flame holds energy and transformation.
The lotus unfolds spatial clarity.
The conch embodies breath and voice.
Together, they form a grammar of perception. Meaning arises not from any single gesture, but from their interplay.

  When the timer rings, step back.
  Notice what you created without judgment.
  How did it feel to simply begin?

• Celebrate it:
  It might look simple or rough, but it is real.
  It did not exist 10 minutes ago.

2. Beautiful Oops

This exercise invites you to play with mistakes and surprises.

• Start with something simple:
  Draw a quick sketch or write a short verse (just a few lines).
  Do this quickly, without aiming for perfection.

• Introduce an “oops”:
  Now, deliberately mess it up a bit.
  Spill a drop of coffee on your sketch.
  Take a pen and scribble a random line through your verse.
  If you’re playing music, hit a random “wrong” note or add an odd rhythm.

• Step back and look/listen:
  What changed?
  Did a strange shape appear from the coffee stain?
  Does the nonsense scribble suggest a new idea or word?
  Does the wrong note give your music a jazzy twist?

• Adapt and transform:
  Incorporate the mistake into the piece.
  Turn the coffee stain into a tree in your drawing. Rewrite one of your verse lines to include a wild word where the scribble is. Repeat that wrong note again in a pattern and make it a quirky motif.

• Reflect:
  How did it feel to not only make a mistake, but to welcome it?
  Did it lead you somewhere you wouldn’t have gone otherwise?
  
  Remember this feeling the next time you worry about getting something “right.” Sometimes, the treasure lies just on the other side of an “oops.”

3. Revisit and Refine

This practice helps you experience the power of returning to a work with fresh eyes.

• Choose a “shelf” piece:
  Dig out something you created in the past – a sketch, a draft of a poem, a recording of you playing an instrument or singing, an old idea you never fully developed. It’s best if it’s at least a few weeks (or months) old.

• Observe without judgment:
  Before changing anything, spend a few minutes with this old work.
  What stands out to you now? Notice any parts you actually like (you might be surprised!), and note places that feel lacking or different from your current vision.

• Reflect on growth:
  Ask yourself: How am I different from the person who first made this? What skills or insights do I have now that I didn’t have then? Jot down a couple of thoughts.

• Rewrite or redo a part:
  Pick a section or aspect of the old work and work on it anew.
  For a drawing, you might literally draw over it or start it again from scratch, keeping the good elements. For writing, try rewriting a paragraph or the ending. For music, develop a new variation on the old melody. Don’t be afraid to substantially alter it.
  This is not about trivial edits; it’s about evolution.

• Compare and take note:
  Step back and compare the new iteration with the original.
  What’s changed?
  Does it feel closer to what you intended, or perhaps it turned into something surprisingly different?

• Take it or leave it:
  There’s no pressure to “finish” the old piece even now — the goal is to practice the act of returning. You might merge the old and new into a better whole, or you might simply take what you learned and apply it elsewhere.
  In either case, congratulate yourself for being able to learn from your past self. You’ve just carried your art (and your understanding) one turn up the spiral staircase.

4. Material Conversation

Engage in a dialogue with your chosen medium.
This exercise can be done with any form of art.

• Choose your material:
  It could be a piece of clay, a musical instrument, a blank document for writing, or your own body for dance. Whatever it is, set aside expectations of a final product. Your goal is to listen and respond.

• Begin with observation:
  If it’s a physical material like clay or wood, touch it, notice its texture, temperature, malleability. If it’s an instrument, play a single note and listen to its resonance. If writing, sit with your thoughts and notice which images or words float up. If dancing, stand in the space and feel the pull of gravity and the floor under your feet.

• Make a “statement”:
  Do one small action. Draw a single line or shape. Play a short riff or chord. Move one part of your body slowly. Write a single sentence or even just a word. This is you “speaking” to the material.

• Listen for the response:
  Now, pause and observe what happened. Did the paint drip or the line go somewhere unexpected on the paper? Did the sound of the chord suggest a melody? Did that one dance move make you want to naturally do another? Did the single written word spark a feeling or memory?

• Respond back:
  Do the next thing that feels like a reply to what you observed. Maybe the paint drip looks like a tree — so you follow it and draw leaves. The melody hint from the chord makes you play a few notes that seem to fit. Your body, after that initial move, feels like swaying — so sway. The word you wrote makes you think of another word or an image — write that down.

• Continue the conversation:
  Keep going with this back-and-forth. Alternate between doing and observing. At each step, ask, “What is it telling me? What do I feel it wants next?” Follow your intuition.

• Reflect:
  After some time, step back and look or listen to what has emerged. How did this process feel compared to forcing a preconceived idea? Did the outcome surprise you? What did you learn about your material — and about your own style of responding?

Remember: This exercise isn’t about making a masterpiece; it’s about practicing listening. Do it often, with different materials, and watch your attentiveness grow. The more you listen, the more the world will reveal its creative secrets.

5. Embrace the Unknown

This exercise is about allowing something unexpected to emerge in your art.

• Set the stage for (a moderate) surprise:
  Choose a creative activity you’re comfortable with (writing, drawing, music, etc.). Prepare as you normally would —your tools and space ready— but mentally let go of any specific outcome.
  Tell yourself, “I’m open to whatever shows up.”

• Use a prompt with a twist:
  To invite the unknown, use a prompt that’s a bit outside your usual theme. For example, if you usually write love poems, use a prompt like “journey” or “city at midnight.” If you usually draw portraits, maybe your prompt is “wind” or “growth.” If you play music, perhaps decide to compose in an unusual key or mode, or use an instrument or scale you don’t usually use.

• Create in bursts:
  Start creating something from the prompt for 5 minutes, then pause. During the pause, note something unexpected that has appeared. (Maybe a character in your story said something profound you didn’t plan, or a weird shape appeared in your sketch, or a melody turned out haunting instead of cheerful.) Jot down or acknowledge that surprise.

• Follow the surprise:
  Continue for another 5-10 minutes, but now focus on that unexpected element. Develop it further. Perhaps that odd shape in your drawing starts to look like an animal — give it more definition. The haunting melody – repeat it and let it bloom. The character who said something profound – explore why they said it.

• Review and ask questions:
  After you’ve spent time with it, step back and look at the whole.
  Ask yourself: What is this work trying to tell me?
  Does it remind me of something in my life, or a feeling I’ve had?
  Does it answer or raise any question for me?

Share (if you want):

If you feel comfortable, share this piece or a part of it with someone else and ask them what stands out. Sometimes others can see revelations in our work that we’re too close to notice.

• No pressure to conclude:
  It’s okay if the piece feels unfinished or mysterious.
  The goal is not to tie it up with a neat bow, but to experience that not knowing can lead to interesting places. As Rilke advised, live the question. Let your art give you hints, and be content with hints.

Embrace the journey: The more you practice opening yourself to surprise, the more you’ll find that your creative work can surprise you — and teach you — in marvelous ways.

Prelude: The Power of Play Refused

At some point, you were told not to daydream.
To stop fidgeting.
To speak only when spoken to.
To color inside the lines.

Your questions were too many.
Your stories, too strange.
Your ideas—too impractical for the world that wanted compliance, not vision.

Somewhere along the way, they stole your toybox—not the literal one, but the one built of impossible creatures, half-sketched treasure maps, buttons that opened portals, and sticks that became lightsabers, wands, or tools of rebellion.

Today, we build it back in order to return to the best features of childhood and to recover the radical potential of play as proclamation of independence and protest, and imagination as intervention.

This is a quiet insurrection.
This is memory in the form of making.

The Creative Task: Rebuild the Forgotten Joy

Choose 2–3 of the following categories.
For each, create an artifact—physical, digital, or hybrid.
Use any medium: collage, clay, stop-motion, animation, sound design, zines, digital illustration, installation, even poetry.

The goal is not realism.
It is imaginative reparation.

Build…

• An invention: A device or machine that defies logic and obeys wonder.
  (E.g. A clock that runs backward on bad days.
  A storage box that translates silence.)

• A creature: Something no textbook would approve, but your mind insists exists.
  (It eats rules and excretes dreams.)

• A tool: A pencil that draws in other dimensions. A ruler that measures grief. Scissors that cut through conformity.

• A space: Design a classroom—or world—where curiosity governs.
  What does it look like? Smell like? What sounds echo there?

• A forbidden object: Something you were once told you couldn’t have, couldn’t say, couldn’t be. Sculpt it. Paint it. Animate it.

• A ritual: A daily act that reawakens your creative self.

This week, we’ve mapped memory and perception.

In times of distortion and overwhelming noise, resistance often begins not with confrontation, but with creation. When the world feels fragmented, and certainty slips through our grasp, it is the act of making—of shaping perception into form—that helps us find our way through.

Art has long served the role of propagator. Both reflecting, and re-visioning.
When institutions dull the senses and systems flood us with distraction, the creative act cuts through the fog, asking not what is, but what could be seen differently.

After the rational world collapsed in the wake of World War I, Surrealists and Dadaists turned to dreams, absurdity, and the unconscious—not to escape reality, but to challenge its imposed narratives. They understood that when the official version of truth becomes unbearable or incomplete, the role of the artist is not to explain, but to disrupt and reframe.

Today, we must notice that what is bursting at the seams is beyond politics and of perception itself. But sometimes, art hands us an anti-myth—a story that unravels the old scripts.

   Use the archetypes, images, masks, broken chains, quotes or symbolisms however you like. Let it be cathartic, messy, brave.

   And then, write (any) lines from the prompts below:

   • “The story I am writing is: _______.”

   • “And I remember now: I am _______.”

This practice is not about rejecting myth altogether—
but reclaiming the right to remake it.
As Chaplin said, “You, the people, have the power... to create happiness... to make life free and beautiful.”

The stories we carry shape the futures we dare to imagine.
So—what myth ends with you, and what truth begins?

🧾 Instructions

Option A: Solo Version (A4 – 4 Panels)

• Take an A4 sheet and fold it evenly into 4 horizontal sections.

• In the top section, begin a drawing. Don’t plan—just respond with lines, shapes, or symbols.

• Fold the section back to hide it. Move to the next section.

• Repeat this process over several days, optionally rereading parts of this week’s posts before each new drawing.

• At the end, unfold the paper. What emerges? What surprises you?

  

Option B: Group Version (A3 – 8 Panels)

• Use an A3 sheet (one per participant) and fold it into 8 narrow panels (accordion-style or horizontal).

• Pass the paper between 2–8 people. Each person contributes to one section—without seeing the others’ work.

• Alternatively, use the same format solo over a longer period—one panel per day or per reflection.

Make it playful:
Host an Art-Making Night with your favorite people. Bring out the paper, pens, snacks, music—and maybe even reflections from a recent visit to a local art museum or gallery.

Step 1: Select with Intention

Choose an artwork—visual, musical, literary, or performative—that speaks to you yet has always held something unresolved, challenging, or mysterious. It could be a piece you've briefly admired, something you've struggled to appreciate, or even something you once rejected outright.

Some Thoughtfully Curated Examples:

• Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh (Netherlands)

• Traditional Huichol yarn paintings (Indigenous, Mexico)

• Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt (Estonian composer)

• An Emily Dickinson poem (American poet)

• Sand mandalas by Tibetan Buddhist monks

• Afternoon at La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat (France)

• A folk lullaby or traditional song from your cultural heritage

Step 2: Engage with Awareness

Spend dedicated time simply experiencing the artwork (you can also use the music piece linked above). Notice your reactions—physical sensations, emotions, memories that surface. Rather than seeking immediate answers or interpretations, allow yourself to acknowledge your natural responses without judgment. Consider gently:

• What feelings arise immediately? Comfort, resistance, curiosity?

• Does this piece evoke memories, hopes, disappointments?

• What assumptions am I discovering about art, creativity, or even myself?

Step 3: Reflect through Creativity

Now, give yourself permission to respond creatively. Translate your reflections into a small act of creation. It might be a few written words, a rough sketch, a simple photograph, or a gesture/movement to a beat. Keep it small and approachable—this isn’t about creating something “beautiful,” but about honoring and externalizing your inner experience.

Step 4: Transforming Disappointment into Potential

Next, explore gently any areas of personal disappointment or perceived failure that your reflections stirred up. Approach this feeling tenderly, asking yourself:

• What new perspective might emerge if I gave this disappointment a second chance through creative expression?

• How can this artwork guide me to transform frustration into something expressive, meaningful, or hopeful?

Embrace the idea that what feels unresolved or disappointing in your experience could be raw material for meaningful creation—an opportunity to find beauty and insight precisely where you least expect it.
